Jimmy's MIS Procedure

PATH® Minimally Invasive Technique
Jimmy’s surgeon, Dr. Brad Penenberg of Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, implanted Jimmy using a novel surgical technique called the PATH® Technique. The minimally-invasive surgical technique is unique and is performed only by surgeons who use Wright’s patented hip implants and instruments.

Typical hip replacement surgery requires 6 weeks to 3 months for patients to fully recover from what has been, historically, a more traumatic surgical procedure. With the advances in implant technology, combined with Wright’s PATH® Technique, which is designed as a soft tissue-sparing approach to surgery, patients are now able to shorten their recovery to a matter of days.

You may have thought that minimally-invasive surgery only pertains to the smaller length of incision that a surgeon is able to operate within. That is only partly true. Wright’s PATH® Technique is truly minimally-invasive, because it is a soft tissue-sparing approach. What goes on underneath the incision is every bit as important as the size of the incision when it comes to a quick recovery.

Wright’s PATH® Technique has several benefits over traditional, more invasive, hip replacement surgery.

Traditional Hip Replacement PATH® Technique
Surgeons cut the abductors (muscles) during surgery Surgeons save the abductors / short external rotators (muscles)
Surgeons cut 4 to 5 tendons around the hip Surgeons release a single tendon (piriformis)
Surgeons make an incision in the hip capsule Surgeons preserve and repair the hip capsule, preserving function and stability in the hip joint
Extensive soft tissue damage Minimal soft tissue damage, particularly no stretching of the gluteus medius, because the percutaneous incision allows for direct visualization and surgical access to the patient’s acetabulum
Bleeding Minimized blood loss
Pain Minimized pain
Days and weeks of recovery Reduced recovery time
