Dennis, CONSERVE® Total Hip with BFH® Technology
At 52 years old, Dennis is finally walking pain-free for the first time since he was a teenager. At age 17, Dennis was diagnosed with a painful condition called spondylitis, a form of arthritis that causes chronic inflammation of the spine. Over the years, as his spine became more inflamed and stiff, Dennis began relying on his hip joints to make up for the loss of mobility in his spine. This extra strain on Dennis’ hips caused the joints to gradually wear down, causing stiffness and restricted range of motion.

For the next 30 years Dennis treated his arthritis with medications but knew he would eventually need both of his hips replaced. He put off the surgery for years because, as a mechanical engineer, he wanted to find a joint replacement product made from the most advanced materials. His fear was to have his joints replaced with a material that would wear out too quickly, resulting in multiple hip replacement procedures.

After researching hip replacements on his own, Dennis decided that Wright’s CONSERVE® Total Hip w/BFH® Technology offered the must durable and advanced solution. In particular, he liked that Wright’s BFH® implant is made of metal to address the long-term wear problems that have previously been associated with total hip replacement. Dennis was also impressed with the design of the prosthesis, which features a larger head to allow for a greater range of motion, minimizing the risk of dislocation.

Dennis found a surgeon in his area who used Wright’s hip products and in May of 2006 had his left hip replaced with the CONSERVE® BFH® implant. Following the surgery, the pain in Dennis’s hip was gone and within hours he was standing on his own. Surprised at how quickly he was able to recover from the surgery, he decided to have his right hip replaced just three months later.

Three days after his second hip replacement surgery Dennis walked out of the hospital and was able to return to work. Today he is enjoying a lifestyle he hasn’t known since he was 17.

“Since I was first diagnosed with spondylitis in 1974, I had only been able to ride a bike for 30 minutes a day maximum. But, now I am able to bike for miles, swim and even walk a mile to work each day. I’m no longer hobbling along. It’s just amazing. Hips certainly aren’t what they used to be!”
