Roger, CONSERVE® Total Hip with BFH® Technology Recipient
Roger had also always lived an active lifestyle. As a young man, he played years of football with the physical nature of the sport taking a real toll on his body. Later in life, Roger worked long hours on his feet and, while only in his 40’s, Roger started to experience pain in his left hip. As the years passed, his pain increased until he found he was no longer able to play golf or go bowling without pain. Even sleeping became uncomfortable. When over-the-counter remedies no longer made a difference, Roger saw his doctor and was diagnosed with osteoarthritis. Total hip replacement was discussed as an option to alleviate the pain.

Roger was immediately wary of having hip replacement surgery too early in life, for fear he would have to have multiple replacements due to the relatively short lifespan of traditional total hip implants. Roger was also equally concerned with the risk of dislocation. It also may last longer, reduce the risk of dislocations, and has a theoretically better range of motion than traditional hip replacement options – and that these benefits may allow Roger to carry on in his active lifestyle, pain-free.

In January 2004, Roger was implanted with a CONSERVE® Total Hip with BFH® Technology and was on his feet the following day. Roger said that the surgery was so painless; he only took one pain pill after his surgery! Within the first four days, he was walking without any assistance, and in just eight weeks Roger was back to work, lifting and moving heavy objects.

Besides living without any pain in his left hip, Roger is back on the golf course, back to bowling, and is ultimately enjoying his active lifestyle again – all thanks to his hip replacement. According to Roger, his only regret is that he did not have the surgery earlier.
